Grand Prairie—A man was fatally shot by police early Sunday, Aug. 31, after allegedly assaulting a woman and firing a handgun while driving on Interstate 30.
Around 12:50 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call from a woman who said her intoxicated boyfriend was armed and assaulting her as they traveled westbound from Dallas.
Officers located the vehicle as it exited I-30 at Belt Line Road and stopped in a gas station parking lot. Police said the woman ran from the passenger side as an officer approached to protect her.
According to witness statements, the suspect fired a handgun multiple times out of the vehicle window prior to encountering officers.
The suspect refused commands to show his hands and began reaching inside the vehicle. Fearing for his safety and the woman’s, an officer fired, striking the man.
A loaded handgun was later recovered in the area where the man had been reaching, officials said.
Officers provided life saving measures to the suspect, who was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name will be released by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office after family notification.
The woman was treated at the scene for injuries from the alleged assault and released. Witnesses reported that the suspect had fired multiple rounds from the vehicle window before encountering officers.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Team is leading an independent investigation, while the Grand Prairie Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct a separate administrative review.
