Irving police, firefighters honored with Life Saving Award

Irving—Medical City Las Colinas presented Irving firefighters and police officers with a 2025 Life Saving Award for the heroic efforts they demonstrated to help save an Irving school teacher’s life after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

On May 9, Irving Police and Fire Departments responded to a low-speed single-car accident where Luis Marchany Cuevas was found unresponsive and not breathing due to cardiac arrest. Irving Police began CPR until emergency medical staff (EMS) arrived. EMS continued CPR and other life-saving procedures until they arrived at Medical City Las Colinas. Cuevas spent 10 days in the Intensive Care Unit, initially unresponsive due to an oxygen-depleted brain injury. Because of the exemplary care from the emergency, cardiac and intensive care teams, Cuevas made a remarkable recovery and was present to thank the firefighters, police officers and medical staff.

“Medical Las Colinas values its trusted partnership with the Irving Police and Fire departments,” Medical City Las Colinas CEO Christina Mathis said. “Because of their rapid intervention and through our comprehensive system of care, a potentially traumatic event became an extraordinary story of recovery and perseverance.”

Cuevas will return to work this fall as a bilingual teacher in the Irving Independent School District.
