Irving—The Irving Masonic Lodge No. 1218 recently awarded a scholarship to the relative of a lodge member, continuing a tradition that has continued for more than a decade.

The most recent recipient, Hailey Isaacs, received a scholarship on June 10. A graduate of Clifton High School in Bosque County, Isaacs was active in softball, 4-H and FFA. She plans to attend Midwestern State University, where she will pursue a degree in sports medicine.

“When I got into student athletics, I enjoyed the camaraderie between the players and the coaches and wanted to still be a part of that, even though I will not be playing softball in college,” Isaacs said.

Jeremy Johnson, a member of the Irving lodge, said the scholarship reflects the Grand Lodge of Texas's commitment to public education.

“Supporting public education has been one of our core traditions for almost 200 years,” Johnson said. “Almost every Masonic lodge in Texas gives away scholarships of some kind.”

While the scholarship may not fully cover tuition, Johnson said it makes a difference.

“You’ve got to set up a dorm room, buy books, and buy a new computer. So, this isn't a whole lot of money, but it'll contribute. It helps,” he said.
